The Tantragee Saddle

Approximately 4 kms from Central Nelson on the south eastern side of the city, Tantragee Saddle is the key to some great forest track riding in and around Fireball Road (Yellow) .

The Tracks shown here are the main ones only, with a bit of investigation you'll find many other great small single tracks to conquer. Once at the Brook Street carpark (OK Corral) follow the unsealed road which steadily climbs for approximately 1km to the saddle.

At the saddle climb over the stile and you can choose to continue straight onto Fireball Road or right down into the valley floor.

Fireball Road gives you a mixture of 4WD and single track weaving its way through pine forest.

This undulating terrain provides both sustained climbs and exhilarating downhills to satisfy both the fitness freak and adrenalin junkie.

This area alone can provide days of entertainment but should you wish to venture futher Tantragee Saddle provides access to both The Dun Mountain Walkway and Fringe Hill.

Nelson - NZ

Come and discover the creative paradise that is Nelson – an irresistible blend of lifestyle and stunning landscape at the top northwest corner of the South Island.

From the northern edge of the Southern Alps across the fertile plains and out to a great sweep of beaches, our place is beautifully laid out under a generous sun that delivers New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours.

You can discover the diverse landscapes in each of these areas on one of our quality hire bikes.

January and February are the warmest months of the year and July is generally the coldest.

Even in winter we are blessed with many clear sunny days and so visitors can generally enjoy outdoor activities in all four seasons.

Snow is rare on the lowlands but falls are common in the mountains in July and August. Our average annual rainfall is 986mm .

Cycling is a year round activity in Nelson although October to May are the most suitable for cycle touring.
